From project rescue to a high-performance, headless future connecting a global audience.

Project Overview

ArteEast is a premier international non-profit dedicated to promoting the films, culture, and artists of the Middle East and its diaspora. With a massive archive of 25,000 films, they serve a dual audience of global academics and the general public.

Dark City Digital was brought in as a "rescue partner" after a previous agency failed to grasp the technical complexities of the archive and the unique operational needs of the organization.

01 The Challenge

Reimagining a digital property from the ground-up.

Executive Director Ginou Choueri faced a critical set of hurdles that threatened the organization’s digital future:

  1. Project Recovery
Project Recovery: The previous agency’s WordPress-based approach was fragmented, slow, and unable to support the heavy metadata of the vast film archive.
  2. Operational Friction
ArteEast relies on short-tenure student interns and volunteers. The legacy system was too complex to manage, creating massive administrative bottlenecks.
  3. Funding Stakes
The project was funded by a prestigious Ford Foundation grant, requiring a strict launch window to remain compliant with institutional obligations.
02 Our Solution

Headless Engineering & Modern Design

  1. Sophisticated Visual Identity
Beyond the technical "plumbing," we developed a modern, "cool," and design-forward aesthetic. The new look reflects ArteEast’s status as a leading arts organization—clean, minimalist, and highly visual—ensuring the artists and filmmakers remain the focal point of the user experience.
  2. Headless Architecture (Next.js & React)
By decoupling the "Head" (the website interface) from the "Body" (the archival database), we utilized a
Next.js and React framework to provide:
    • Rapid & Secure Deployment:
This framework allowed our team to "sprint" toward the Ford Foundation deadline while eliminating the common security vulnerabilities of traditional CMS platforms.
    • Lightning-Fast Archival Search:
Researchers can now query thousands of records instantly without the lag common in older, "bloated" systems.
  3. Bespoke CMS for High-Turnover Teams
We developed a custom, simplified management interface specifically designed for their staffing model. This allows Ginou’s team to onboard and train new volunteers in minutes rather than days, ensuring the site stays updated regardless of staff tenure.
  4. Integrated E-commerce
To support long-term sustainability, we integrated a seamless e-commerce storefront for artist merchandise, creating a direct revenue stream to fund future cultural initiatives.

“Working with Jim has been a pleasure. He is consistently reliable, professional, and responsive to feedback, with a proactive approach to solving challenges. His timeliness and commitment to delivering projects efficiently and on schedule stand out. I highly recommend him and the Dark City Team.”
